Over the next few months (or maybe a little longer) we’ll be restoring a VF1000R from the frame up. The concept for this bike is not a strict “factory new” restoration, but more of a fresh daily rider. We’ll be powdercoating the frame, installing all new bearings and seals, and rebuilding the hydraulic systems & installing new stainless hoses. The engine is in good shape except for pitted cams (no oil mod), so we’ll change those out, install new valve guide seals, and do a little port smoothing while we’re at it. Check out the pictures below, and click the thumbnails for a larger image!
This is our starting point for this project: a 1985 VF1000R with 14,000
miles on it. The engine is sound, except for pitted cams. So, we'll fix
that problem, do a little port smoothing while we're at it, and just leave
the engine at that. Although it doesn't look too bad in the picture, the
fiberglass is beat up and the paint is in pretty bad shape. So, we'll
address those as well.
We had a donor bike with Yoshimura slip-ons, which we installed beforehand,
in order to hear what it sounded like before the tear-down started. It
turns out that the bike sounds good, without being obnoxiously loud, so
we'll use them. You can't tell from this picture, but they actually angle
out, or away from the bike, when you view them from the rear. So, they'll
be turned up and moved inward, to fit more like race bike exhaust.
We're about 2 hours into disassembly and now it's time to get on the lift!
